With the implementation of the reform and opening-up policy,China's social economy has developed rapidly and the level of per capita income has greatly increased. At the same time, the income gap between different social classes is also gradually widening, revealing a series of economic and social problems. For example, the fertility behaviors of families from different income groups show great differences.Studying the relationship between the income gap and the differences of the residents' reproductive behaviors helps us to better understand the current reproductive behaviors of the residents of different income classes in China, and then to formulate a more scientific and reasonable family planning policy and its supporting measures.Through the use of literature, qualitative and quantitative research methods, combined with marginal utility theory and the theory of substitution of child quality and quantity, based on China Statistical Yearbook and CHNS and other relevant data, the research found that:(1)Without considering the family planning policy, the higher the income level of residents, the fewer the number of children, that is,the intention of residents to have more children is negatively correlated with their income level;(2)Income changes have the most obvious impact on fertility behaviors of middle-income families.Middle-income families have fewer children when their incomes rise by a certain percentage;(3)The lower the income level, the more obvious the substitution relationship between the quality and quantity of children born by residents. This conclusion is especially applicable to low-income families. In this regard, relevant government departments should pay attention to the relationship between income gap and differences in residents' reproductive behavior and take corresponding measures. For example,to broaden the income channels of low-income families, formulate appropriate preferential policies for education subsidies, and implement differentiated rewards andpunishments for fertility behaviors of residents of different income levels,so as to better coordinate with the national family planning policy and improve the social and demographic structure. The results of the study have certain positive significance for promoting the stable development of China's economy and society and further adjusting and perfecting the birth policy.
