The concept of inertia is one of the most basic concepts in physics. It is also one of the earliest concepts encountered in learning physics. It is the key and difficult point in middle school physics teaching. In order to help students correctly form the concept of inertia in actual teaching and improve the efficiency of classroom teaching,we need to deeply investigate the formation process of inertial concepts in students' minds and find their cognitive barriers.Using a combination of interview method and questionnaire survey method, students in Grade 6 and Grade 8 who have not formally learned the concept of inertia, and students in Grade 9 and the sophomore year who have learned the concept of inertia as the research objects, investigate the pre-school and post-school students' perception of the concept of inertia. With reference to domestic and foreign research materials on the concept of inertia and the teaching of inertial concepts,as well as questions from teachers, the questionnaire was carefully designed and surveys were launched. Then conduct interviews with typical respondents to investigate students' perceptions in depth.Through the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the survey results,we get five cognitive characteristics of primary school students' inertial concept formation, four cognitive characteristics of junior two students' inertial concept formation, four cognitive characteristics of junior three students' inertial concept formation and five cognitive characteristics of senior one students' inertial concept formation.According to the four characteristics of students' cognitive process of learning inertia concept, this paper puts forward some teaching suggestions, such as “understanding students' wrong concepts”,“creating conflict situations”,"Repeat the process of inertia concept establishment","create opportunities for students to learn inertia concept to be able to apply",and so on.
