Illustration teaching receives increasing attention from the majority of experts,scholars and frontline history teachers in secondary schools as a unique and attractive teaching method.The illustrations in high school history textbooks have been changing with the upgrading of textbook editions,offering wide types of illustrations and numerous illustrations with improving quality.As an excellent educational resource,textbook illustration acts as a teaching tool for teachers to use with high proficiency in class while improving students’ reading ability,stimulating students’ learning interest and cultivating students’ core literacy such as the concept of time and space and evidence of historical materials.However,few history teachers reasonably utilize illustrations in class,and there are some problems to discuss in practical teaching applications of illustrations.Taking the Outline of Chinese and Foreign History of state-complied edition(the second volume)as an example,this paper discusses and analyzes the type and quantity of illustrations in textbooks around the textbooks and the author’ s practical teaching experience,investigates and analyzes the current situation of teachers’ selection and application of illustrations in class and students’ ability of recognizing illustrations based on the review of domestic and foreign research status by adopting literature research,questionnaire survey,case analysis and other research methods.At the end,the problems and disadvantages are summarized,and several suggestions are proposed by combining with teaching cases.The part of Introduction sets forth the research objective and significance by combining with the research background of historical illustrations,sorts out important domestic and foreign research results,overviews core concepts,and presents innovation points after narrating the research methodology.In the first chapter,the illustrations in the Outline of Chinese and Foreign History of state-complied edition(the second volume)are classified,and quantity statistics is made for the illustrations in each unit.Some corresponding illustrations in the textbooks are selected for auxiliary analysis.The second chapter makes a questionnaire survey among teacher and student groups.Through analyzing the survey data,the problems and shortcomings encountered by students and teachers during the illustration teaching are summarized respectively.In the third chapter,for the problems encountered in illustration teaching,three principles to be observed in illustration teaching and methods of applying different types of illustrations during the teaching process are proposed and explained by combining with specific cases in the Outline of Chinese and Foreign History of state-complied edition(the second volume),so as to provide teachers with some ideas about the application of illustrations in history classes.
