In the process of language learning,learning motivation is an important factor affecting the learning effect,so is it in Chinese as a second language(L2)learning.The Chinese language education in northern Thailand is carried out on a large scale but the quality of teaching is not satisfying,because of Thai Chinese students' weak learning motivation.Based on the L2 acquisition theory of Dornyei(1994)and drawing upon the academic achievements concerning L2 learning motivation at home and abroad,this study investigates and analyzes the Thai Chinese students' Chinese learning motivation at Jianqun Middle School.This paper consists of five chapters.The 1st chapter is the introduction including the research background,dissertation topic determination,research aim and the significance of the study.The 2nd chapter is literature review,which introduces the theories and research results of the L2 learning motivation and Chinese as a L2 learning motivation at home and abroad.The 3rd chapter is the investigation scheme introducing the respondents,approaches to investigation,data collection and collation.The 4th chapter is the analysis of the data,mainly analyzing the general Chinese learning motivation of the students in Jianqun Middle School,the characteristics and differences among students in different learning stages,and the students of different gender.Chapter five is the conclusion of the study and thesis puts forward proposals to stimulate the students' Chinese learning motivation.The analysis of the data shows that the intensity of Chinese learning motivation of the students in Jianqun Middle School is medium.The students have the highest motivation at the Language Level,followed by the Learner Level,and the lowest motivation is at the Learning Situation Level.The learning motivation of primary school students is higher than that of the junior middle school students,but the difference among individuals of primary school students is greater than that of junior middle school students.The overall motivation of boys is slightly lower than that of girls,but there is no obvious gap between them regarding the individual difference in Chinese learning motivation.In the end,based on the actual situation of Jianqun Middle School,the thesis puts forward suggestions from three aspects: teachers,textbooks and schools to stimulate and maintain students' Chinese learning motivation.
