The cultivation of mathematical modeling literacy in high school has already been carried out in many foreign countries.Because of different national conditions, each country has different emphasis. In the Mathematics Curriculum Standards for Ordinary Senior High Schools(2017 Edition)(hereinafter referred to as the "Mathematics Curriculum Standards"),the status of mathematics modeling has been further improved. Therefore,it is very interesting to know the current situation of mathematical modeling literacy of students, which is an important basis for proposing mathematical modeling teaching strategies and promoting mathematical modeling literacy of students.Only when we know the real situation can we train the students better. This paper examines the mathematical modeling literacy of some students in senior two in three middle schools in Lhasa by testing their knowledge and level of mathematical modeling. The questionnaire was designed separately to test. One is Mathematical Modeling Literacy Questionnaire, which mainly investigates students' understanding of mathematical modeling knowledge, and the other is Mathematical Modeling Literacy Test Paper.Based on the Mathematical Modeling Literacy Questionnaire, the results show that:(1)there is no significant difference between the sexes in their attitudes towards mathematics, but between the sexes in their understanding of mathematical modeling knowledge and its application in real life;(2)there is no significant difference between the students of arts and sciences in their understanding of mathematical modeling knowledge and its application in real life, but between their attitudes towards mathematics and their understanding of mathematical modeling knowledge.Based on the Mathematical Modeling Literacy Test Paper, the results show that:(1)Level I and Level II are the mathematical modeling literacy levels of most students, and a few students can reach Level III;(2)Mathematical modeling literacy levels are not significant in terms of gender;and(3)There are significant differences in mathematical modeling literacy levels among liberal arts students.Three mathematics teachers in a certain school were interviewed face to face. Thus, the factors that affect the mathematical modeling literacy of high school students are:(1)the schools do not pay enough attention to the cultivation of students' mathematical modeling literacy;(2)the teachers' professional literacy is insufficient and lack of theoretical guidance;and(3)teachers rarely penetrate mathematical modeling knowledge into classroom teaching. Finally,by comparing the data of the test paper before and after the mathematical modeling activity course,it is found that most students' mathematical modeling literacy has been improved. In view of the present situation of mathematical modeling literacy of students in Grade Two,the following suggestions are put forward in order to further cultivate or improve students' mathematical modeling literacy:(1)to improve teachers' mathematical modeling literacy,so that students can better develop mathematical modeling literacy with the guidance of teachers;(2)schools and teachers attach importance to developing students' mathematical modeling literacy, and give lectures on mathematical modeling appropriately;(3)in combination with students' actual level, adopt hierarchical teaching, reasonably arrange teaching contents, make students participate in the application of mathematical modeling in real life by transforming implicit knowledge into explicit knowledge;(4)in combination with textbook content, penetrate into mathematical modeling from simple to deep,so as to enable students to better understand the role of mathematical knowledge as a tool;and(5)make good use of various resources, try to adopt flexible teaching methods, let students take the initiative to solve different contradictions in class, reflect students' initiative and enrich modeling forms.
