Entering the new century, the role of ocean as the growth pole of regional economic development is more prominent.China’s gross marine product accounts for 9%of GDP,the related port logistics and ocean freight volume play an important role in national production. With the spring breeze of economic globalization, coastal ports have become the link between domestic and foreign economies, promoting the opening up and economic development of port cities. From this,China has formed five port groups, which to a certain extent reduce the waste of resources and play a great driving force to the regional economy. However, what is the role of the port to city, reflected in what aspect?Based on the domestic and foreign literature on port promoting city development, this thesis studies the impact of coastal ports on the economic growth and industrial structure of port cities in China.GDP per capita represents economic growth, and two indicators of industrial structure advancing and industrial structure rationalization represent industrial structure upgrading. After theoretical analysis, the use of 28 in 2009-2019 in China’s coastal port and the city of panel data to carry on the empirical analysis, the first use of panel regression model analysis on the overall level ports influence on urban economic growth and industrial structure, then the robustness test is carried out. Finally,it is divided into five port groups to verify that there is regional heterogeneity in the role of ports, and to distinguish port types for inspection.Theoretical analysis shows that there are differences among the five port groups and among the internal sub-ports after the ups and downs of Chinese ports. In the long run,the port cargo throughput and container throughput are increasing. In terms of the development modes of ports and port cities, some maintain synchronous development, while others develop at different speeds, and the development modes of ports and port cities are diverse. The empirical results show that,on the whole level, the port cargo throughput promotes the economic growth of port cities, promotes the optimization and upgrading of industrial structure, and plays a significant role. For each port group, port cargo throughput has a significant impact on the economic growth of port groups around the Bohai Sea,southeast coast and southwest coast, has a significant impact on the industrial structure optimization of the Pearl River Delta and the southwest coastal port group cities, the impact on Yangtze river delta port group of cities are not significant, this may be due to the weak dependence of cities in the Yangtze river delta on ports. For different port types, port cargo throughput has a great impact on the economic growth of coastal port cities, and has a great impact on the optimization of industrial structure of Hekou port cities.Based on the above results, this thesis puts forward some suggestions that port can better serve port city development.
