Dengzhou is located at the junction of the three provinces of Henan,Hubei, and Shaanxi, where all major traffic roads meet. This geographical location made Dengzhou a military center during the confrontation between the North and South regimes, and Dengzhou City was also prospered because of this.In the second year of Hongwu in Ming Dynasty(1369),military commissioner Xian Kong administered Dengzhou and built the inner city of Dengzhou, which opened the curtain of the development of Dengzhou’s urban landscape since the Ming Dynasty. After that,Dengzhou City first continued its identity as a military stronghold.Urban military and political landscapes, such as city wall and moat,Cheng Huang Temple, and altars, have been restored rapidly and have been continuously updated. After the Jiajing period, the military structure changed, and the revitalization of local culture became the focus of urban development. The subprefecture schools were transferred to the inner city, the academies were restored, and the religious landscapes such as temples increased day by day.The prosperity of the cultural landscape has also greatly enhanced the cultural selfconfidence of the city, making the beliefs of Allah and Mazu who entered Dengzhou due to immigration into the city and realized localization. The development of industry and commerce in the city is also more tolerant, the culture of the market is flourishing, the landscape of streets and alleys is gradually improved, and the industrial and commercial landscape corridor centered on the Shizijie has taken shape.During the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, the Eight Views of Dengzhou were finally established, and the changes of the Eight Views showed the expansion of the urban landscape space of Dengzhou.Since the beginning of the Jiaqing period, the problem of banditry around Dengzhou City has become prominent and intensified.Under this circumstance, military support landscapes such as cities have been re-emphasized,and a large number of religious landscapes have been converted into educational landscapes. Some landscapes unrelated to military and political affairs have also been given the function of guarding their homes. The Christian Church also took the opportunity to invade Dengzhou City. However,in order to avoid the war,the people concentrated in the city, which once again promoted the development of the city’s industrial and commercial landscape. As a result, the city’s political and industrial and commercial landscape corridors centered on Dingzikou,Dashizijie and Xiaoshizijie were finally formed, and Dengzhou City was also slowly transforming into modernization in the turbulent times.By studying the urban landscape of Dengzhou since the Ming Dynasty,it will help us understand the transformation and development of the military and political cities in the upper reaches of the Han River. In addition, taking social life as the perspective of thinking also allows us to find that the urban system does not adjust rapidly with changes in external conditions, but shows obvious lag. This shows that the investigation from the urban landscape can focus on the "cells" that constitute the city, and then better understand the individual laws presented by the operation and change of the urban system.
