Since the reform of China’s higher education system, universities have started to gradually expand their enrollment scale. At the same time, the reform of logistics system has put forward new requirements for the development of college canteens. In the modern social environment, the learning and living style and consumption concept of contemporary college students have also changed, and the monolithic and traditional dining mode is unattractive to the teachers and students in school.Although college cafeterias have been updated several times since their development, problems such as insufficient space utilization and crowding during peak hours still occur in the process of actual use.As the most important dining place in campus life, college cafeteria is one of the most visited spaces by students and teachers. Therefore,it is especially important to consider the rationalization of the dining space in college cafeterias under different time periods.By exploring the strategies of optimizing the design of college cafeteria dining space in two dimensions of time and space,we can obtain better solutions for later design practice and meet the needs of students and teachers for college cafeteria dining space in terms of functionality, comfort and aesthetics.Firstly, this paper clarifies the background, content and significance of the study. Then, the concepts of spatio-temporal dimension and college cafeteria dining space are explained, and combined with case studies and field research to provide the theoretical basis for the subsequent research.Secondly, through the field research and data collection of four college cafeteria dining spaces in different areas, the shortcomings of the four college cafeteria dining spaces in the process of use are investigated, and the actual demands of the diners on the college cafeteria dining spaces and the suggestions of optimized design are combined with the questionnaire research to provide the factual basis and data support for the subsequent design practice.Again, through the analysis of the design objectives and design principles of the college cafeteria dining space, and the analysis and summary of the actual cases, the design methods of the college cafeteria dining space optimization in two perspectives of time and space are finally summarized. Finally, the design strategies summarized above are applied to the design of the cafeteria project of Yantai Research Institute of China Agricultural University and the garden, which promotes the depth of theoretical research through design practice and further verifies the practicability of the optimal design of college cafeteria dining space under the perspective of temporal and spatial dimensions.Under the perspective of spatio-temporal dimension, time and space intermingle to reshape a full-time,diversified and functional canteen dining space. We optimize the design of college cafeteria dining space, reasonably plan the layout and mode of the cafeteria space,so that the college cafeteria can be used effectively in different time periods, thus achieving the purpose of intensive use of space and creating a better dining environment for diners.Through this design practice,we hope to play a certain reference value and significance for the construction and development of college cafeteria dining space.
