The ancient city of Suzhou, known as the "Oriental water city",has always maintained the double chessboard pattern of "adjacent water and land, parallel rivers and roads" and the style of "small bridge, flowing water and people" with regional cultural characteristics. The river system is the blood of Suzhou’s urban development, the cultural landscape heritage of the ancient city of Suzhou and the shining city card of Suzhou. However, with the advancement of urbanization and the change of residents’ traditional lifestyle, some river systems in Suzhou have gradually lost their traditional transportation functions, resulting in many river channels being abandoned or even landfilled. Therefore, under the concept of cultural heritage protection,it is particularly important to continue to give full play to the advantages of "river landscape" as one of the main landscape features of traditional Suzhou, make up for the lack of regional cultural characteristics of Suzhou caused by the decline of river landscape, and make Suzhou,an ancient city with many cultural heritages, glow with its own characteristics.Firstly, through the sorting and analysis of relevant historical materials and data, this paper clarifies the elements of the research background. The text is divided into the following parts:firstly,it defines and analyzes "cultural heritage","cultural heritage protection" and "river landscape".Secondly,it analyzes and summarizes the water system changes and river landscape characteristics of Suzhou City, and analyzes the relevant contents of landscape features along the river with ancient poetry and painting works.By analyzing the excellent cases of historical water city protection at home and abroad, this paper explores the integrity, ecology, continuity, authenticity and protection of river landscape.Based on the concept of cultural heritage protection and combined with the landscape characteristics of urban rivers in Suzhou, the principles of authenticity, integrity, ecology, continuity and diversification of river landscape design are put forward; The design strategy of excavating the history and culture of the river, setting the characteristic landscape of the river and reconstructing the connection between man and water is constructed;A river landscape design method combining "point, line and surface" is established. Finally, taking the river landscape design of huxiangshi Lane in Pingjiang historical and cultural area as the practice, this paper investigates and analyzes the substantive problems existing in the river landscape, such as the disappearance of the traditional function of the river, the homogenization of the content of the river, the disappearance of the "man and water" relationship of the river and so on.Systematically update the river landscape by excavating history and culture, shaping River heritage sites, constructing river landscape lines and rebuilding the "human water" connection,so as to provide a novel and complete design path for Suzhou River landscape, provide new thinking and new path for inheriting and developing Suzhou River landscape and protecting Suzhou urban appearance, and endow Suzhou River landscape with new vitality. The article holds that under the concept of cultural heritage protection,to protect and inherit the river landscape with rich historical and cultural value,we should not only protect the cultural relics and buildings around the river, but also activate the streets along the river to highlight the history and culture of the river. How to protect, inherit and develop the traditional river landscape in the inevitable modern urban construction and renewal,so that the urban appearance can be continued, inherited and developed is a subject worthy of further research.
