| According to estimates of United Nations,60% of the population will be in urban areas by 2050,a percentage rise of 54%.To reduce the burden on the urban areas satellite towns are introduced, however, the residents of these towns depend on the host city for different type of trips on daily basis. So,the poor connectivity between satellite towns and host city is one of the main cause of failure of satellite towns. As the population living in these towns usually belongs to poor or lower middle class because of high land prices in the host city, but they have to pay much more in terms of money and time to reach the host city because of poor public transport and dependency on private vehicles.Traffic congestion in the city of Lahore-Pakistan is increasing from year to year, especially at the point of intersections/nodes,such as at the signalized intersection connecting Shahdara(satellite town)to Lahore(host city)which is the case study area. The traffic jams or congestion are the cause of stress, loss of money and time, and extra carbon dioxide emissions. This is an area where smart technology really can make our lives easier. Many developed countries pioneering with smart traffic technology like radar sensors and cameras in combination with Artificial Intelligence. The purpose of this study was to do theoretical analysis of using Green Public Transportation and to propose an alternative low-tech smart node solution for developing countries like Pakistan, which cannot opt for high-tech solutions,to manage the traffic flow using the PTV Vissim software. The required data included the questionnaire survey of the residents of satellite town,Geographic Information System(GIS)has been used to identify road traffic crashes hotspot areas.Besides that, intersection traffic volume and signal timing data is required to do simulations in the Vissim software. The results show that there is a dire need for sustainable, integrated, green public transport to make the satellite towns attractive to live in.The performance analysis of the intersection conducted using Vissim Software indicated that the application of Vissim software was valid. The traffic management proposed has reduced both queue length and delay time and in result improves the Level of Service(LOS)of the roads. |
