| Historic districts are an important part of traditional urban architecture and are inextricably linked to traditional culture.As an important carrier of historical tradition and national culture,they are often presented and expressed at different scales with specific visual images-cultural symbols.Digital technology tools,typically represented by parametric design and machine learning,have provided a lot of support and expansion for the refinement and manipulation of different cultural symbols in historic districts,and have been studied and applied by different professional designers.This paper intends to summarize the current situation of cultural symbols and related digital technology applications in historic districts,and use relevant technical tools to explore and try out the digital encoding and translation process methods of cultural symbols in typical historic districts,taking Jiangnan historic district as an example,in order to provide reference for related planning design and application research.The whole paper is discussed in six chapters.The first chapter is the introduction,which analyzes the research background,the concept of the object,and the current situation of related research at home and abroad,mainly clarifies the connotation and extension of historical districts and cultural symbols,and proposes the research significance and research framework of this paper.Chapter 2 is the theoretical construction part.On the one hand,this chapter composes and classifies the morphological elements of cultural symbols in historic districts,and establishes five symbolic prototype systems of spatial texture,architectural form,natural landscape,environmental color,and pattern through visual transformation analysis;on the other hand,based on the characteristics of digital design thinking paradigm,this chapter theoretically discusses the digital operation of cultural symbols in historic districts from two aspects of coding and translation,which lays a foundation for later On the other hand,based on the characteristics of digital design thinking paradigm,the digital operation of cultural symbols in historic districts is theoretically discussed in terms of encoding and translation,which lays the foundation for the strategy analysis and design application in the later chapters.Chapters 3 and 4 are the preparatory parts of the applied research.The former is to organize the materials of the research object,and the latter is to sort out the model of the research tools.Chapter 3 systematically summarizes the cultural symbols of Jiangnan’s historic district based on the five cultural symbol archetypes system summarized in the previous chapter;Chapter 4 takes"shape" as a clue and proposes "image sampling and reflection of shape","machine learning to recognize shape",and "machine learning to recognize shape".machine learning","shape grammar"and "functional topological relationship".The combination of the two chapters lays down the operational sources and technical methods for the design and application strategies in Chapter 5.Chapter 5 is the design application operation part.This chapter extracts the typical examples of the five types of cultural symbols in the historic district of Jiangnan,combines the corresponding digital compilation strategies,and uses City Engine,Grasshopper professional tools and Python programming script language to carry out detailed design application operations in order to obtain representative design application results.It not only verifies the feasibility and effectiveness of different digital compilation methods for various cultural symbols in the historic district,but also provides a reference design solution for relevant designers.Chapter 6 is an evaluation of the compilation model.This chapter invokes the concepts of"visual construction" and "visuality" in visual culture theory,and combines "value rationality" and"instrumental rationality"."It calls for designers to pay attention to the true moral meaning of cultural symbols by combining the functional role and humanistic concern,and to prevent the results of the digital compilation of cultural symbols from being reduced to a mere "top-down" and"bottom-up" approach.We call on designers to pay attention to the true moral meaning of cultural symbols in the context of functional and humanistic concerns,and to prevent the results of digital compilation of cultural symbols from becoming "formalism".Finally,Chapter 7 is the concluding section,which summarizes and reflects on the research results and presents the outlook for the future. |
