On the occasion of the 40 th anniversary of the historic city conservation system,China has been emphasizing cultural protection and inheritance. As an important city along the ancient Maritime Silk Road and a geo-cultural center on the west coast of Taiwan Strait,Quanzhou calls for more research on innovative exhibitions and the use of historical cultural resources. And inspired by this, the historical development of settlements in Quanzhou area from a regional perspective was put forward, taking the land-water transportation as the key foundation.A highly integrated regional structure consisting of water, wharves, bridges, transit markets, and places of worship, together with production places, extended from the inland mountainous hinterland to the seaport plain in history and was revealed. How the land-water transportation influenced the historical regional structure and settlements in Quanzhou area is the subject. In Chapter 3,routes,facilities,and transit system of land and water transportation were sorted. In Chapter 4,the role of the water and land transportation network in the formation of the regional structure of Quanzhou area was further analyzed in terms of functional collaboration, spatial connection, and population structure.Relying on the land-water transportation,Quanzhou established the spatial connection among ports, cities, and hinterland, formed a functional layout of production-transportation-marketing integration, and established a complete chain based on the cultural and techniques exchanges brought by diverse races. In this process,Quanzhou’s urban system coincided with the commercial network among towns and settlements. To be specific,in the vast hinterland were scattered production villages, most of which were clan villages bound by geo-bloodbusiness ties;counties or towns at water and land transportation nodes functioned as transits, and Quanzhou city was a comprehensive regional political and economic center. Also, many fishing villages with local markets were along the coast.Three types of towns were analyzed in detail in Chapter 5: the regional center, transit towns in the mountainous hinterland, and productive clan villages along with ancient traffic, taking Chinese feng shui, spatial characteristics, streets and markets, public space and so on into analysis. In the end,a vision of building a network of historical and cultural resources in Quanzhou from the perspective of landwater transportation was proposed, hoping to provoke ideas for urban renewal planning for the ancient seaport city.
