| The hall, with a long history and profound cultural connotations,is an important space in the dwelling and an important element of the Chinese culture of ’Living with Centrality’.In the vast Chinese land, over the millenniums of ethnic intermingling, the halls of various regions share the same roots in culture, while differing in character. In the new era, when the main work of ethnic affairs is to "forge the sense of community for the Chinese nation",it is important to break through the boundaries of architecture and traditional research methods, and to study the constrn-cultural system of the halls of various ethnic groups in different regions with a broader scope. This thesis will focus on the core contents of "residential halls","constrn-cultural system" and "typological mapping analysis".The research is conducted in order of the theoretical basis and technical approach, cluster analysis and type mapping, distribution patterns and dissemination mechanisms.Chapter one focuses on the new background of "forging the sense of community for the Chinese nation" and the bottlenecks of Chinese vernacular architecture research. Then the core concepts of this thesis are defined, such as "constrn-cultural system" and "typological mapping analysis".It also organizes the theoretical foundation of vernacular architecture, halls and cultural systems on top of the relevant studies in architecture and anthropology.Chapter one establishes a broad research vision including architecture, cultural anthropology and folklore, and delineates the map of the People’s Republic of China as the scope of the research.Chapter two explores the important concepts of "halls" and "constrn-cultural system" on the basis of existing research findings, and further clarifies the scope and content of the research. The term ’hall’ is historically traced, its complex meaning between architecture and anthropology is examined. Then the constrn-cultural system is deconstructed into four interdependent but opposing structural components: "natural conditions","human environment","artistic aesthetics" and "built configurations",and progressively analyses their profound.Chapter three and four focuses on the typological mapping of the constrn-culture of halls, including technical path and the analytical results.Under the research horizon framed in the chapter two,a large constrn-cultural sample library of halls is established and translated into characteristic information from the perspectives of natural conditions, human environment, aesthetics and built configurations. With the help of cluster analysis, the clustering results are generated by using "spatial characteristics","construction attributes","cultural symbols","behavioural activities",etc.to study the characteristics and distribution features of each cluster separately.Based on a large amount of accurate data, this paper draws some conclusions of cross-regional collective identities of the hall, such as central axis symmetry, facing south, connecting courtyards, timber structure, brick and wood enclosure,Confucian cultural symbols, functional complex including living and worshiping. It also finds the intermingling nodes of construction-culture in Sichuan and Chongqing,Fujian,Guangdong and Taiwan regions,etc..In terms of factor relevance, the natural environment, the spatial attributes and the construction attributes are highly related, while the social environment, artistic aesthetics and the human attributes of the construction structure are combined. From the introduction of concepts and the construction of theories,to the derivation of technical paths,to the generalisation of results and mechanisms, this thesis has built a closed-loop research route of "theorymethodology-analysis-theory proof".The theoretical foundation and the research results are mutually corroborated and the horizon of "constrn-cultural system" is used throughout. With an interdisciplinary vision and a new method of statistics, this thesis provides an idea for the development of traditional Chinese dwellings research in the new era. |
