Abstract/Summary:
In recent years, the renewal of old communities has become an important issue in the context of urban stock to promote the transformation of urban construction and sustainable development. As the basic functional unit of the city, old communities are an important part of the physical space of the city,an important carrier of the city’s history, culture and spiritual connotation, and create the external image and spiritual inner of the city. However, old communities are inevitably exposed to problems such as decaying physical environment, declining spatial vitality and hollow community spirit and culture, which cannot meet the increasing demand of community residents for human living environment.Traditionally, various material elements of space are given full attention and importance in the renewal of old communities, but the cultural connotation of old communities and the historical and cultural resources accumulated over a long period of development often give way to material renewal, which leads to deeper problems of urban characteristics. Therefore,in order to further explore the humanistic connotation of old communities, this paper seeks the design of cultural revival and renewal of old communities rich in regional characteristics, starting from the relationship between urban cultural context and old community renewal.By introducing the theory of cultural lineage as a support for exploring the connection between urban cultural heritage and the utilization of community cultural elements, this paper constructs a basic framework for activating old communities along urban cultural lineage, explains in detail the steps of the construction method, and condenses the three-step construction method of overall vision, element identification, and theme strengthening. Two urban cultural routes are proposed: the red cultural route highlighting the spirit of resistance and the Xiang Shui life route highlighting Hunan culture.Through the field research of fourteen old communities in Changsha, combined with the comparative research method and the community asset map tool, the qualitative method is used to identify and evaluate the potential resources of the communities, and to summarize and analyze the current problems in the renewal of the old communities in Changsha. From the perspective of the city as a whole, three regeneration strategies are finally summarized and proposed: revitalizing the cultural value of the community, stimulating the spatial vitality of the settlement, and guiding residents to participate in governance. Finally, based on the guidance of this method, the Shuifengjing community in Changsha City is selected for design practice and completed design results, with a view to providing reference for the regeneration of similar old communities.
