As the important carrier of the natural landscape and historical and cultural relics such as farming civilization, rural landscape, folk culture, etc.,traditional villages remain unique landscape genes and cultural symbols. However, with the development of rapid urbanization, the survival and preservation of a large number of villages are facing serious challenges.Through the selection of "Chinese Traditional Villages",some villages have been salvaged and protected in a "listed" manner. However,it is still inevitable that many "ordinary traditional villages" with conservation value but not on the list will be ignored.Furthermore, the concept of regional historical and cultural protection will lead to the protection and utilization of traditional villages shift from individual village conservation to integral cluster conservation. The spatial distribution pattern of existing traditional villages is the result of spatial and temporal accumulation under the combined influence of various factors, and the traditional village aggregation areas often have similar natural geographical environments,socio-economic conditions, and historical and cultural backgrounds.Taking mountainous and hilly regions of Zhejiang Province as the study area, first, this study explained the comprehensive mechanism of the order parameters that affect the spatial distribution of traditional villages from the perspective of historic layering and under the guidance of the theory of man-land relationship, the theory of synergy and self-organization.Second,based on the selection of relevant order parameters, the geospatial characteristics factors,socio-economic factors, and historical and cultural values factors were quantitatively translated and extracted to construct the traditional village spatial distribution order parameter characterization index system. Then, combined with the identification results of ordinary traditional villages and the distribution of Chinese traditional villages, this study further identified the traditional village aggregation areas. Finally, the paper proposed cluster protection and utilization development strategies. The research framework and methods in this study can provide a reference for the identification of traditional village aggregation areas and cluster conservation and utilization in other regions and the technical support for the conservation of traditional villages in Zhejiang Province. The main results showed that: 1)The development and evolution of the spatial distribution of traditional villages in the mountainous and hilly areas of Zhejiang Province are mainly influenced by natural geographic order parameters and socio-economic order parameters, and the socio-economic order parameters are gradually replacing the natural geographic order parameters to take the dominant position;2)Through geospatial feature screening,socio-economic factor analysis and historical and cultural value evaluation,a total of 14 traditional village aggregation areas were identified by combining the spatial distribution of Chinese traditional villages, which were further divided into 2 key protective demonstration areas,4 key potential areas,6 ordinary protective areas and 2 ordinary potential areas according to the superimposed grading of regional conservation base and regional development potential;3)According to the object and connotation of traditional village cluster protection and utilization,on the basis of the spatial pattern of cluster protection and utilization of "two centers, three zones, four categories and multiple areas",the coordinated conservation and sustainable healthy development of those aggregation areas could be promoted by coordinating the point resources and linear elements, combining the protection and utilization, innovating policies and mechanisms.
