With the continuous improvement of living standards, people are paying more and more attention to food quality and safety.Vegetables are essential food in people’s life, and people have a strong dependence on them. With the continuous expansion of vegetable production scale and the increasing variety of vegetables, the amount and area of pesticide use are also constantly increasing. Thus, how to ensure the safety of vegetables has become an extremely important partof guarding "A Bite of China".In recent years, the vegetable industry in Nantong City has flourished.andit has become an important livelihood work to ensure vegetable safety and improve vegetable quality. In order to understand the current situation of pesticide residues in vegetables in Nantong City, this study investigated the current production status of vegetables in Nantong City, the attention paid by vegetable planting entities to pesticide residues, the purchase and use of pesticides, and the layout and operation of the pesticide residue detection system in Nantong City.Common edible vegetables were selected for sampling to detect various pesticide residues in different vegetables. The removal effects of pesticides such as dichlorvos, chlorpyrifos, phorate, and omethoate using methods commonly used by citizens, such as clean water, edible salt water, ultrasonic cleaning, and vegetable and fruit detergent cleaning were studied. On this basis, further analysis of the reasonsfor pesticide residues in vegetables were performed, and targeted suggestions were proposed. The main research findings are as follows:(1)The vegetable planting area in Nantong City is relatively large, with a total output of about 6.5 million tons and over a hundred varieties.Among them, leafy vegetables have the largest planting area,,accounting for 38.99%.(2)Vegetable planting entities in Nantong attach great importance to pesticide residues, but there are still shortcomings in the purchase and use of pesticides.(3)The pesticide residue detection system in Nantong City has a complete layout and can operate normally.(4)The average detection rate of pesticide residues in vegetables in Nantong City was 11.5%,indicating high safety and quality of vegetables.(5)In the detection of pesticide residues in vegetables of Nantong City, there were differences in pesticide residues in different months and types of vegetables. The detection rate of pesticide was the highest in July, and the detection rate of pesticide in leafy vegetables was also relatively high.(6)In the vegetable production of Nantong City, the detection frequency of low toxic pesticides such as acetamidine, carbendazim and tetramethrin was relatively high.(7)Among the commonly used vegetable cleaning methods among citizens, vegetable and fruit detergent and ultrasonic cleaning have better effects on removing pesticide residues in vegetables.(8)The pesticide residues in vegetables in Nantong City are mainly attributed to non-standard pesticide use, inadequate supervision by relevant government departments, and an unreasonable structure of pesticide products. It is suggested to make targeted improvements from expanding the coverage of centralized distribution of pesticides, standardizing the use of pesticides during vegetable cultivation, improving the regulatory system for pesticide residues in vegetables, promoting the construction of green vegetable production bases, strengthening the detection of pesticide residues in vegetables, and guiding citizens to use reasonable cleaning methods. The research results may have a certain guiding role in improving the quality of vegetable production in Nantong City, and also serveas a reference role for vegetable quality and safety supervision in the Yangtze River Delta region and even nationwide.
