With the improvement of China’s economic strength and comprehensive national strength, the international influence of Chinese is increasing day by day.The promotion of the country’s opening-up policy, the construction of the "Belt and Road" project, and the educational deployment to expand the opening of education to the outside world and increase the international influence of Chinese education have attracted more and more foreigners to study in China.International students,as sojourners in cross-cultural communication, have diverse cultural identities. The Chinese name is not only a "business card" of its shared meaning in a heterogeneous social culture, but also a symbol of its new cross-cultural identity.International students in China have various Chinese names, and their attitudes towards Chinese names reflect different choices of cultural identities and cross-cultural strategies.Based on the theory of identity and cross-cultural adaptation, this paper argues that the attitude of international students to Chinese names can reflect the change of their cross-cultural identity.Understanding, liking and using their own Chinese names often helps international students to better build cross-cultural identities, accept diversity, integrate into new environments, and complete cross-cultural adaptation.According to the identity characteristics of international students, this paper divides their cross-cultural adaptation into"instrumental adaptation" to solve the problem of survival in a foreign country,"developmental adaptation" to achieve students’ multi-faceted development, and "emotional adaptation" to adjust psychology and meet emotional needs. The three dimensions of"adaptation" are explored separately. The first chapter of this paper, the introduction, includes the research background, research significance, literature review and theoretical basis. On the basis of previous research,it puts forward the hypothesis that "attitude to Chinese names affects the cross-cultural adaptation of international students in China",and proposes "developmental adaptation".The second chapter is the research design and implementation, using the research method combining quantitative research and qualitative research. The subjects of the questionnaire survey were 55 international students from Shandong University and Chongqing University. As a supplementary structured interview, the survey subjects were 15 international students from Shandong University,10 Chinese teachers with experience in naming international students, and 10 Chinese students who participated in the questionnaire survey to explore the effect of Chinese names on cross-cultural adaptation of international students from different perspectives. The third chapter is divided into three parts:"Investigation and Analysis of International Students in China" "Investigation and Analysis of Chinese Teachers and Students" "Problems Existing in the Names of International Students".The first part combines the results of the questionnaire and the interview, and analyzes the basic personal information of international students in China, their attitude towards Chinese names, and their cross-cultural adaptation. Then a function is established, taking the attitude of international students towards Chinese names as the independent variable and the cross-cultural adaptation as the dependent variable.According to the obvious positive correlation between the two,the positive influence of the former on the latter is explored. In the second part, according to the interview results, from the perspectives of Chinese teachers and aboriginal people,it respectively discusses "Suggestions for Chinese Names for International Students","The Influence of Chinese Names on International Students" and "The Meaning of Chinese Names for International Students".The fourth chapter proposes that "the attitude of international students in China to Chinese names affects their cross-cultural adaptation, and there is a positive correlation between the two","the acceptance of Chinese names of international students in China by the target language group affects their cross-cultural adaptation","the construction of cross-cultural identity for international students in China is a dynamic process" and"intercultural adaptation of international students in China is generally good, but the understanding and mastery of Chinese culture needs to be strengthened" and other conclusions.According to the research results and the problems found in the Chinese names of the international students, suggestions are made for Chinese teachers and international students respectively. The last chapter is the conclusion, summarizing the whole text, and pointing out the insufficiency and innovation of the article. From the perspective of cross-cultural communication, this paper studies the influence of the Chinese name,an identity symbol,on the cross-cultural adaptation of international students in China, and explores the rationale behind the cross-cultural phenomenon.Further suggestions are provided for the cross-cultural adaptation of international students in China and the teaching of Chinese teachers’ cross-cultural communicative competence.
