This report is based on the Chinese-English translation project of the “Drinking in Jiangxian County ” collection.Commissioned by a local media corporation known as Three Eyes Media, the translator completed the translation of the “Drinking in Jiangxian County” collection published on the company’s We Chat account and selected two prose, namely “Slightly Drunk” and “Drinking Style of Jiangxian County” to complete this report. The series of essays was authored by local writers and literary enthusiasts and features narrative, descriptive, and argumentative prose related to the local wine culture.Through the narration of drinking anecdotes and argumentation about drinking, the source text conveys the author’s unique feelings and life perceptions of the local wine culture. The translation practice aims to provide the target readers with insight into the local culture, which is of significant positive significance for the dissemination of local culture. An analysis of the characteristics of the source text on the lexical, syntactical, and textual perspectives is conducted in this report, involving the use of synonyms, the idioms, derogatory words on the lexical level;the alternative use of Chinese compound sentences, parallelism, antithesis on the syntactical level which provide the prose with the beauty of variety;as well as the various rhetorical devices on the textual level. This report is based on the Stylistic Marker theory proposed by Liu Miqing. The Stylistic Marker is divided into formal markers and non-formal markers.Focusing on the phonological and formal deviation, formal markers consist of phonological markers, lexical markers, registerial markers, syntactic markers, textual markers and rhetorical markers. While non-formal marks aim at the judgment of aesthetic effect, including the way of representation, the internal quality, the temperament of the author as well as factor of the receptors.Liu Miqing also proposed three kinds of style translation approaches, namely correspondence, recasting and decoloring.Under the guidance of the stylistic marker theory proposed by Liu Miqing, the translation method for tackling lexical markers, syntactic markers and rhetorical markers is explored in the Source Text by style translation approaches of correspondence, recasting and decoloring.A conclusion is made in the report that style translation approaches proposed by Liu have better instructions for guiding prose translation. In prose translation, the stylistic features of the source text should be analyzed in accordance with the stylistic marker theory and the style translation approaches should be implemented for the translation practice. On the premise of not affecting the readability, the correspondence approach can maximize the original text style.Conversion of part of speech and addition is applied to imitate the syntactical features of parallelism and antithesis on the syntactical level.Literal translation is applied to the translation of metaphor and hyperbole on the textual level.Where correspondent formal markers are absent in the target text or for communicative purposes, recasting could be utilized to recreate the style.Understatement and omission are employed when translating derogatory words and synonyms on the lexical level.Reorganization is used when translating Chinese compound sentences on the syntactical level. In the face of insurmountable language and cultural barriers, the application of a decoloring approach can prove beneficial in bolstering communication. The free translation is adopted for the translation of four-character idioms. The aim of employing these three approaches comprehensively is to ensure that the style of the source text is transferred to the greatest extent possible based on meaning transferring, thereby providing readers with a high degree of aesthetic pleasure. It’s hoped that the report can provide some reference and practical advice for fellow translators.
