Abstract/Summary:
This report is based on the book critical of literature,Le roman modes d’emploi(hereinafter referred to as Le roman)written by Henri Godard, the essayist and specialist of the French novel in twentieth century.Composed of 14 chapters, this work presents the French novelists and their representative works which achieved various innovations in the twentieth century and have distinctive characteristics such as “anti-tradition” and “anti-mimicry” in chronological order and the thematic search mode. The author carefully sorted the development of French novels during the first75 years of the twentieth century and analyzed the feature of each stage of development.Le roman has a typical academic writing style, with interwoven narratives and arguments, and a large number of novel fragments which are cited to prove the author’s point of view. How to deal with citations from various sources and forms to achieve a certain translation goal is a question that translators should consider comprehensively.Referring to the academic research of Skopos theory,we use the citations from chapters 7-9 of this book as material and try to formulate strategies for translating citations,in order to find methods of more targeted translation for all kinds of citations. This report can be divided into four chapters :The first chapter contains an overview of the translation project,a summary and textual analysis of the content of Le roman, and an explanation of the preparation of the pre-translation,the translation procedure and questions relating to the post-translation.The second chapter covers the introduction to the issue of translating citations and analyzing the purpose of translation. In this chapter,we recounted the case of citations from Samuel Beckett’s works in Le roman, reflected on the inadequacy of the original translation strategy of citations, and analyzed the translation objective reflected by this case. With the help of the theory, the concept of translation has been adjusted to establish the premises for the formulation of the translation strategy of citations. The third chapter focuses on citation analysis and discussion of the translation strategy.Taking the content of citations from Beckett’s works in Le roman as the main material, supplemented by other types of citations in the same book, the purpose, type, effect and specific content of the citations were analyzed.Guided by the adjusted translation concepts in the previous chapter,we tried to find more targeted translation methods for all kinds of citations.First, the cited works have been divided into two basic types : those without Chinese translation and those with Chinese translations. Then,we divided the works that were cited and already had a Chinese translation into three types : work interpreted differently by Chinese and French translators, text modified by the original author during self-translation,and citations from original works that have been modified by the author of Le roman. For each situation, specific examples have been offered to analyze and discuss how to handle the translation of citations,so that the form and spirit of the original text can be restored in the translation and the literary thoughts of the author can be transmitted. To summarize this translation practice,in the fourth chapter,on the one hand,we have integrated the results of the discussion from the first three chapters of this report and formulated a new strategy for translating citations; On the other hand,we have summarized the gains and shortcomings in this practice. The gains lie in the accumulation of team translation experience during the course of the project, which also exercises the overall capacity of the translator, but the shortcomings are mainly reflected in the knowledge reserve, the mastery and application of Chinese and French and the differences in style of each translator on the team.Through the summary and the reflection,we have better understood the importance of the responsibility of translators.
