Individualism is a problem that must be faced in the process of China’s modernization.Only by continuously exploring the individuality contained in ancient Chinese thought can we deepen our understanding of individualism.Guo Xiang’s thought is one of the representatives of Chinese individuality, and he has revealed the mystery of individuality from a very unique perspective.Guo Xiang’s individuality cannot be separated from the special historical background of the Wei and Jin dynasties:the manor economy and the organization of the fortified manor house strengthened the self-sufficient and independent production and lifestyle;Unstable political environment makes individuals focus on the stability of their inner lives;During the Cao Wei period, the promulgation of "talent-oriented"has sparked a peak in the evaluation of individuals. The theological reactionary trend of thought in the late Eastern Han Dynasty attached importance to the theory of natural vitality, triggering a shift from "virtue" to "talent",making individuality increasingly prominent. From the perspective of theoretical inheritance,The individual consciousness in the original canon of Zhuangzi deeply influenced Guo Xiang.Tao Te and Shuxing in Zhuangzi were extended by Guo Xiang to the theory of personality;"Abandoning the small and promoting the great" was transformed by Guo Xiang into "Same as small and big",and thus the spiritual orientation was transformed from pursuing an ideal personality to respecting individual differences.Guo Xiang’s individuality need to be explored from the perspective of fundamental ontology. The specific direction of the Tao reveals that the Tao is nature, and nature is not an ontology related to real beings, but rather a description of the true state of existence of things. Therefore, nature does not involve an ontology that focuses on the real being, and there is nothing else above the phenomenon. Therefore,we believe that Guo Xiang’s thought is a theory without fundamental ontology, and this theory of non ontology has laid a profound theoretical foundation for individual differences and richness.Individuality is specifically divided into two levels:inward and outward. From the perspective of individual interiors, the theory of natural generation denies the existence of external creators, revealing the most prominent characteristic of individuality:independence.Independence means that individuals do not have to pursue external things,do not have to envy the big with small things, just deeply explore their own personality. The universe is rich and colorful due to personality.Starting from this, the main melody of Guo Xiang’s thought can be manifested:let nature take its course and respect individual differences. And through self forging and self cultivation,an individual can reach a self-satisfied field and realizes the path of self improvement. On the other hand, individuals can achieve altruistic effects through their own achievements.Whether it is mutual benefit between the other and the self,or harmonious coexistence between groups and individuals, individuals have leapt from the subjectivity to the objectivity. The chaos of specific phenomena is so numerous that it can be quelled, and the coordination and stability of society and even the universe can be achieved. The saint under the guidance of the principle of individuality is no longer an ideal personality pursued by individuals, but a symbol of a harmonious society and hierarchical construction. In short,Guo Xiang’s thought exhibits a unique charm of Chinese individuality, providing new inspiration for modern individualism. |
