Abstract/Summary:
The source text are excerpts from a realistic teenage novel of children’s literature,P.S.I Miss You,written by Jen Petro-Roy.The book is a series of letters written by the protagonist Evie to her sister Cilla. The letters tell the story of the 11-year-old girl,Evie,as she struggles to find her own heart and future amid a broken family and strict religion, after losing her older sister. The whole translation practice is completed under the guidance of translation aesthetics.Translation aesthetics is a theory of literary translation.Liu Miqing’s Introduction to Translation Aesthetics, published in 2005,argues that translation is not only a technique but also an art.Translation should focus on preserving the cultural characteristics of the source language while also paying attention to the cultural reception of the target language.Liu also emphasizes the connection between translation and creation, arguing that good translation should not only faithfully convey the original meaning but also have its own style and personality, thereby generating artistic value. Therefore, the two main approach of aesthetic represenation are imitation and rewriting. This report discusses the translator’s translation of an excerpt from P.S.I Miss You from the perspective of translation aesthetics.Guided by translation aesthetics, the study examines the translator’s approach and process, drawing from Liu Miqing’s two types of aesthetic representation in translation.Key insights include: 1)Understanding the original text is crucial for recreating its style and essence using the aesthetic psychological structure of translation aesthetics.2)Faithfulness to the original text is essential, avoiding content alterations for aesthetic reasons.3)Integrating the strengths of both languages allows for flexible handling of form aesthetics, transcending literal correspondences.4)When meeting the requirements of aesthetic representation, translators can express their talent and personal aesthetics.Translation has constraints but offers artistic freedom. The article is organized into five sections. The first part introduces the task’s background, the original text’s content, and its practical significance. The second part describes the translator’s work before, during, and after the translation process. The third part presents the theoretical basis and discusses the main viewpoints and literary aesthetic hierarchy and the formal system of translation aesthetics objects proposed by Liu Miqing. The fourth part is a case study that analyzes and summarizes the translation process at two types of aesthetic representation in translation, providing specific examples to illustrate the main points. Finally, the fifth part concludes with a summary of the gains and deficiencies in the translation practice. The aim of this translation report is to provide reference and assistance for scholars interested in researching children’s literature translation in the future,as well as to offer guidance for children’s literature translation under the guidance of translation aesthetic theory.
