The source text of this translation practice report is excerpted from chapter one and chapter five of the book Coral Reefs: A Natural History by Charles Shepherd,a marine environmental biologist. The selected chapters are rich in content, involving a large number of specialized terms, long and difficult sentences, and objective and rigorous language, which are both difficult and meaningful to translate.Peter Newmark believes that different translation strategies should be used to translate different types of texts.Semantic translation is mostly used for expressive texts, and communicative translation is mostly used for informative and vocative texts.By analyzing Coral Reef: A History of Nature, the translator finds that it is a typical informative text, which has both informative and vocative functions. Therefore, the translator, taking into account the emphasis on conveying objective information in popular science texts, chooses Newmark’s communicative translation theory to translate the original text. Then the translator analyzes and discusses some translation examples from three levels of lexis, syntax and discourse.Translation methods and techniques of addition, conversion, negation and free translation are adopted in the translation.Through this translation practice, the translator finds that communicative translation is applicable to the translation of popular science texts, and using communicative translation to guide popular science texts’ translation can help improve the readers’ acceptance of the target text and achieve a good communicative effect. It is hoped that what we have discussed in this report can provide some references and insights for future translation of popular science informative texts.
