Mr.Yu Qiuyu,a renowned cultural scholar,was invited to deliver a lecture entitled"The Essential Knowledge to Achieve Chinese Cultural Literacy".The interpreter performed a simulated Chinese-English consecutive interpreting task for the first 50 minutes of the speech.Upon completion of the task,the interpreter assessed the quality of his output under the guidance of Eco-Translatology.The interpreter faces three major difficulties:culture-loaded words,vague expressions,and logical incoherence.Culture-loaded words are one of the most common difficulties in speeches on Chinese culture because they have a certain degree of untranslatability.Vague expressions include obscure phrases and ambiguous pronouns.The last major difficulty is logical incoherence.The most typical example is the use of logical conjunctions such as"because" and "therefore",the existence of which creates the illusion of sound logic.Guided by Eco-Translatology,the author proposes four major solutions:adaptive transliteration,adaptive summarization,adaptive explicitation,and adaptive restructuring.Adaptive transliteration is the preferred strategy in dealing with culture-loaded words.This method can retain the connotations of culture-loaded words.If there is no need to provide the exact translation of a term,the author can select adaptive summarization to extract its core meaning.For vague expressions,adaptive explicitation is used to restore the referential content or explicate the obscure information.Regarding logical incoherence,adaptive restructuring is needed to reorganize sentences according to the appropriate logic so that the output agrees with common sense and reason.The interpreter hopes this report can inspire interpreters interested in culture-themed lectures and applying Eco-Translatology in interpreting.
