A Report On The E-C Subtitle Translation Under The Guidance Of Relevance Theory

With the deepening of cultural exchanges worldwide and the popularity of the Internet,foreign films and television works have gradually become an important part of our daily lives.Subtitle translation,as one of the main forms of film and television translation,has also received more and more attention.This report focuses on the subtitle translation of episodes 1-10 of the fifth season of the popular sitcom Young Sheldon.From the perspective of the Relevance Theory,this report creatively proposes three principles to guide this whole translation practice:strengthening contextual effects,conveying the intention of the original,and seeking the optimal relevance.In the meantime,addition,omission,and substitution and other translation techniques are also adopted to achieve the optimal relevance between the target language and the source language,so that the target language audiences can enjoy the same experience as the source language audiences.Through the subtitle translation of Young Sheldon,we can see that the Relevance Theory has a constructive guiding significance for subtitle translation.This report is mainly composed of six parts.The first part is the introduction,which briefly introduces the research background,research purpose and significance,the source text,and the overall framework of the report.The second part describes the whole process of translation from three aspects:pre-translation,in-translation,and post-translation.The third part mainly elaborates on the theoretical basis of the report and the main points of Relevance Theory,and explores the guidance power of Relevance Theory in subtitle translation of American films and TV series.The fourth part explains the translation principles and techniques used in the process of translation under the guidance of Relevance Theory in order to achieve the optimal relevance through case analysis.The fifth part is the conclusion,summarizing the findings of the translation project and pointing out the limitations of this report.The sixth part is the appendix,with subtitle text and translation text.In general,this translation practice is a process of theory guiding practice and practice verifying theory.Hopefully this report can provide some references for the future research of subtitle translation.
