| This is a report on the E-C translation of a portion of chapter six of The Ever-changing Past,published in 2021 by James M.Banner Jr.,an American historian.The book explains the significance of history to an individual’s perception of the world and a group’s or nation’s sense of identity.It covers the fields of historiography,philosophy and other disciplines,and is appealing and inspiring to not only practitioners but also common readers despite its specialized and scholarly nature.Based on the functions and characteristics of the text,the author employs the Reception Aesthetics to conduct an analysis of typical examples of this translation practice.After an introduction to the background information,the characteristics of the source text and the translation process,according to the challenges encountered during the translation,such as contextual gaps and style reproduction,the report makes a detailed analysis of the translation examples at lexical,syntactic and discourse levels from the dimensions of context and style,and comes up with strategies and methods of translation of historically theoretical texts.The study shows that during the translation of informative academic materials,the translator needs to focus on readers’ expectations while fully considering their accumulated experience as well as innovative expectations.Specifically,the translator needs to try to reproduce the style of the source text based on faithfulness to it;strategies and methods such as free translation,amplification,repetition,annotation and reconstructing of sentences can be used appropriately in the translation;the target text should be in a fluent language,and some information should be added to convey the source text’s content and the writer’s intention,and reproduce the features.Through this practice,the translator hopes to come up with tentative translation strategies,and provide some inspiration for other translators who translate historical texts. |
