| The chapter on translation practice is selected from A Place Like Mississippi: A Journey Through a Real and Imagined Literary Landscape,a collection of essays by American writer W.Ralph Eubanks.It records the author’s adventures in Mississippi,USA.He combined the works of famous Mississippi writers,field trips and interviews with writers with his own real experiences to unveil the historical mystery of the state for its readers.By choosing the preface,the first chapter and the second chapter of this book as the ST of her translation practice,the translator hopes to enhance Chinese readers’ knowledge of the southern region of the United States,especially Mississippi.This material belongs to an essay.Generally speaking,essays not only express emotions but also convey information.The challenges in this translation mainly lie in three aspects: cultural variance,structural differences and style reservation.According to the characteristics of the text,the author adopts Translation Variation Theory to solve the challenges in cultural difference.Guided by Professor Huang Zhonglian’s Translation Variation Theory,the translator has put forward some methods to solve the problems of culture,structure and style through analyzing the ST and TT,hoping to provide reference for literary translations in dealing with similar problems.The author found that the theory of translation variation is helpful to solve these problems in literary translation.The two techniques of “adding” and “deleting” can help overcome cultural barriers,so the implied or unwritten information in prose due to cultural differences can be expressed completely and accurately.“Editing” and“integrating” may help retain the original style and give target readers the original reading experience;“reordering” makes the order of words and sentences more consistent with the habits of the translated language,thus reducing the structural disorder. |
