The translation material is taken from the second chapter of Understanding Cormac Mc Carthy(2009),written by Steven Frye, the professor of California State University. This monograph has been designed as the literary companion and the language of it is both plain and literary.Much background knowledge and the comments from many famous critics are included in this monograph.Steven Frye also quotes sentences or paragraphs from Mc Carthy’s work to help readers understand the connotation. The translation report adopts Eco-Translatology as the guiding principle and discusses the translational eco-environment that translators need to adapt to and the translation methods that they need to choose according to the “adaptive selection” and “selective adaptation”.Under the guidance of “selective adaptation”,the report focuses on the adaptation to the language style and cultural background of the source text. The report applies the three-dimensional transformations to conduct “adaptive selection”,namely the linguistic dimension, cultural dimension and communicative dimension. In linguistic dimension, the translator discusses the four-character words, part of speech conversion, long sentences, passive voice and cohesive devices according to the levels of words, sentences and discourses. In cultural dimension, the translator uses the footnote and contextual amplification to address the obstacles caused by cultural differences. In communicative dimension, the emphasis is placed on tone reproduction and the translator does the liberal translation to convey the communicative intention. This translation report manifests the feasibility of Eco-Translatology in guiding the translation of literary text, which is of great significance to the improvement of translation quality.
