A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Abstract Nouns In Maritime Exercise Evaluation Reports

In recent years,China’s shipping industry has developed vigorously.But at the same time,maritime safety and marine environmental protection have emerged endlessly.Therefore,maritime related exercise evaluation reports emerge.Accurate translation of these evaluation reports can make relevant practitioners learn relevant experience and improve their response ability.Consequently,translation of maritime-related exercise assessment reports are valuable.The materials of this translation practice are selected from "Exercise Nautical Twilight2016 Evaluation Report" and "Exercise Torres Evaluation Report 2018",which are typical maritime information texts.In the process of translation,the translator found that abstract nouns appear in the text with high frequency and in various types.They are abstract,generalized,semantically ambiguous and their meanings are vague.In addition,due to the difference in“dynamic and static”from the perspective of the use of words between Chinese and Westerners,they often lead to differences in expressions,language structures and thinking patterns between English and Chinese,affecting the communicative effect.Thus,This practice report focuses on the Chinese translation of abstract terms in the two evaluation reports.The translator divides abstract nouns into four categories according to their origins:inherent abstract nouns,abstract nouns of identity,abstract nouns of action,abstract nouns of quality.Under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation theories,this translation practice report analyzes the abstract nouns in different contexts and summarizes various approaches to translation,such as literal translation,conversion,addition,specification,division,retranslation,reduction,etc.,which solve the translation problems of abstract nouns in the text.It is hoped that this translation practice can provide certain reference for translation and research in the related fields.
