In the context of intangible assets dominating global value chains, how to tap the value of design is not only an unsolved problem of design disciplines at home and abroad, but also a real economic problem for developing countries such as China that want to improve the quality of participation in global value chains but cannot find a model.China is in the stage of high-quality development, but its role as the "world factory" in the global value chain is far from matching its comprehensive national power.Considering the innovation value of design as an intangible asset in the global value chain,it is of great practical significance to promote the sharing of global economic benefits among countries at different levels of development;it is an important reference value for China to extend to both ends of the "smile curve",achieve the rise of the global value chain and promote high-quality development. This paper firstly analyzes the domestic and international research on "the relationship between intangible assets and global value chain","design as intangible assets" and "the relationship between design and global value chain" through literature analysis method.Secondly, through the interdisciplinary research method,we link the three, and study the innovation value of design as an intangible asset based on the perspective of global value chain. Finally, through case studies and comparative analysis,we try to analyze the reasons why design affects the quality of participation in global value chains, and summarize the relevant development models based on the experiences of developed countries. The research content of this paper is as follows: The first part points out that the research object of this paper is the innovation value of design as an intangible asset. The second part points out the increasingly critical role of design in the context of global value chains. The third part analyzes the reasons why design affects the quality of GVC participation in economies, and summarizes the main models for design to promote the quality of GVC participation based on the experience of developed countries. In the fourth part, the paper makes suggestions for the way for design to lead China’s innovation-driven and high-quality development in light of China’s current situation.Based on this, the paper draws the following main conclusions: based on the perspective of global value chains, the innovation value of design as an intangible asset is manifested in improving the quality of participation of economies in global value chains.Developed countries have long been at both ends of the "smile curve"mainly due to the intangible assets accumulated in design input, design promotion and design support;developing countries have long been at the bottom of the "smile curve" due to the lack of financial support for design R&D,lack of official guidance for design innovation and lack of policy protection for design property rights."Developing countries,on the other hand, have long been located at the bottom of the"smile curve" due to the lack of financial support for design R&D,lack of official guidance for design innovation, and lack of policy protection for design property rights.According to the case study, there are two main modes of using design to promote the quality improvement of global value chain participation in developed countries: offshoring represented by factory-less manufacturing and investment cooperation based on design reputation first, both of which are based on the accumulation of innovation value of design as an intangible asset. In view of China’s development status in the global value chain, the latter is more suitable for design-led innovation-driven and high-quality development in China, and this paper also puts forward relevant development suggestions. This paper builds on a large amount of textual data and case comparisons, and strives for the relevance of the article. However, there are still shortcomings in some aspects: first, this paper involves a large number of foreign cases, which makes field research difficult;second, this paper is mainly from the perspective of design, which is inevitably biased towards the involved economics and management contents. As the innovation value of design as an intangible asset in the global value chain becomes more and more prominent, there will be a large number of scholars to conduct in-depth research on it.
