Translation Of Cohesive Device In Biographical Text

This is a report on E-C Translation of Life in LEGO,a biographical work.The translator adopts “Machine Translation and Post-editing”(MTPE)mode,and selects the first two chapters to translate.This book tells the story of the dramatic development of the Lego Group and the growth of the Kirk Kristisansen family in a period of nearly a century since the 1920 s,eventually making it the world’s largest toy production company.With detailed and rich content,the translators and readers of the book can gain a good understanding of the development history of LEGO,and truly feel the significance and spiritual connotations behind LEGO.From the perspective of cohesion theory,this report focuses on the cohesive phenomena and conducts case studies analyzing the source text from two perspectives: grammatical cohesion(reference,substitution,ellipsis,and conjunction)and lexical cohesion(reiteration and collocation).By comparing the translation results of machine translation and post-editing,it is found that some errors such as mistranslations,unclear references,and unclear semantics may occur in machine translation.Therefore,in the process of post-editing and revision,appropriate translation methods are chosen to cope with different cohesive devices.For grammatical cohesion,the translator mainly uses a translation strategy combining literal translation and free translation,as well as translation methods like amplification,reduction,reproduction,and conversion;For lexical cohesion,comprehensive translation methods such as repetition,amplification,literal translation and free translation are used.By applying these translation methods,the translator can effectively correct the cohesive errors made by machine translation,making the TL text more readable and idiomatic.Finally,guided by cohesion theory,the translator summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of using the translation method of post-editing,and puts forward feasible suggestions for the representation of cohesive devices in biographical texts,hoping to provide some references for future translation research and work.
