Research On The Narrative Function Of Garden Space In Yuan Drama

Based on the traditional Chinese spatial consciousness and aesthetic interest,this paper analyzes the garden writing of Yuan drama,and presents the uniqueness of the garden writing of Yuan drama from three perspectives: narrative function,shaping skills and deep meaning.Compared with the previous generation of narrative literature,the garden space in the Yuan drama has a more profound impact on the narrative of drama,which promotes the action of characters and the development of narrative.The vivid and freehand brushwork of Chinese opera makes the garden space of Yuan drama flexible and free.And the aesthetic tendency of Yuan Dynasty and even the whole Chinese culture can be seen through the garden space.The garden space in the Yuan drama is embodied in the concrete images of flowers,willows,paths,garden walls,etc.,which deeply participates in the narrative of the drama.And under the influence of these images,the Yuan drama formed many pattern plots.Therefore,according to the different patterns of plots,this paper divides the garden space in Yuan drama into four categories: the space of passion,the space of sin,the space of cultivating the immortal and seeking the way and the space of official career.On this basis,the paper analyzes how the garden space constructs the plot and promotes the narrative development in different plot modes of Yuan drama.Garden space and narrative complement each other.The specific space is the inner power that decides the action of the characters.It constructs the narrative,and the narrative further deepens the implication of the space.Compared with the literature of the previous generation,the progress of garden writing in the Yuan drama is that the narrative function of space is greatly enhanced.In the shaping of garden space,the writers of Yuan drama created a unique garden image through the choice of narrative perspective,the vivid and freehand space depiction and the smooth and free space transformation.It not only expresses the feelings of the characters but also expresses the aspirations of the writers.So the garden becomes a space that full of people’s temperament and blending emotion with scenery.With the changing moods of the characters and the playwright,the interior and exterior spaces of the gardens in the dramas also shift freely.This fits in with the aesthetic characteristics of realistic gardens in which people can see different scenery at different positions and angles.The space of garden writing in Yuan drama is fluid and flexible,with the unity of emotion,scenery and will,which is both Yuan drama writers’ innovation and rooted in the traditional Chinese spatial thinking and aestheticFrom the garden plot and garden shaping skills of Yuan drama,it can also reveal the different creation tendency and aesthetic taste of Yuan drama writers from literati of previous generations.The choice of back garden as a private space and the sustenance of private emotion in the text make the garden of Yuan drama show a distinct tendency of private.The transformation of garden space contributes to the sudden turn of drama plot,the rebellion of ethical consciousness and the reshaping of aesthetic experience,thus forming the "odd" aesthetic taste of garden writing.By analyzing the activities of the characters in the garden,it is not difficult to find that the garden writing of the Yuan Zaju shows the coexistence of elegant taste and worldly desire in the culture.
