| Electronic devices like smartphones and tablets have gradually evolved into necessities of life in China as society and the economy continue to develop. These devices make life more convenient while also having some negative effects, such as the emergence of young people who are addicted to the Internet. In this translation practice,Behind Their Screens:What Teens Are Facing, published by MIT,was selected as the translation material, which primarily introduces the features of modern Internet technology and the effect that social media has on youths. From the viewpoint of teenagers, the author examines the methodology and results of the research. The author figures out that the source text belongs to informative text, aiming at information delivery. The conveyance of information is the main focus of both informative texts and communicative translation theory. The author guides this translation practice with Newmark’s communicative translation theory and analyzes how to apply this theory to solve problems discovered throughout the translation process in order to produce as close an effect to the original text and the target text as is possible. In order to achieve the accuracy of the information conveyed in the translation, the translator rephrases the sentences describing the research process and the research findings and annotates the technical terms and software application names. In order to achieve the communicative effect of the translation, the translator performs part-of-speech conversion on the relevant words that cannot be understood by literal translation, and in order to achieve the accuracy of the translation, the translator adds some simple sentences and converts some passive sentences into active sentences. In short, while pursuing the accurate and objective transmission of information, the translator strives to conform to the language form of the target language so as to provide the same reading experience as the source language readers. This translation practice has enriched the author’s knowledge reserve and deepened the author’s understanding of communicative translation theory. It is also hoped that it will provide a reference for the informative text translation. |
