This is a report on the translation of the book Social Media for Government:A Practical Guide to Understanding,Implementing,and Managing Social Media Tools in the Public Sphere.This book is written by Gohar F.Khan.The author introduces the use of several popular social media platforms,and tries to help policymakers and governments to implement a social media-driven government by giving practical cases.The general goal of the book is to establish a transparent,open and collaborative government.Recently,social media is becoming an integral part of our daily life.Through this translation project,the translator aims to get a better understanding on social media tools and further masters translation theories and skills.The translator also wants to provide practical guidance to readers who want to use social media for marketing purpose.According to Reiss' text type theory,the source text is an informative text.However,in addition to giving an objective introduction,the author also aims to offer readers guidance and suggestion.So the translator thinks the original text is both informative and vocative.To translate this kind of text,the translator adopts the communicative translation strategy.The translation version is expected to convey the information accurately as well as maintain the original linguistic effects.This report is consisting of five parts.In the first part,the author mainly introduces the background and significance of this translation project.The second part is an introduction of the original text,mostly about the author,chosen chapters and the linguistic style of the original text.The third part gives description to the whole translation processes,which include pre-translation steps like theoretical guidance and translation strategy;processes of while-translation,such as translation difficulties;and post-translation steps like editing,proof-reading and quality control.The fourth part is the core of this report.The translator summarizes the translation methods used in the informative text translation,such as addition,omission,conversion and so on.The fifth part is the conclusion of the translation report.It summarizes experience and lessons translator has acquired and problems that still need to be solved in this translation project.
