Nowadays, the international medical exchanges are becoming more and more frequent, and a country’s comprehensive national strength can not be improved without the development of science and technology as well as medical exchanges. This requires medical translation to keep pace with the times.Medical English,an indispensable branch of EST,is informative, practical and purposeful. Therefore, the Skopos theory plays an essential role in guiding medical translation. The author of this translation report takes as the source text a medical text Principles and Methods of Visual Training, and does an in-depth analysis of the C-E translation of the medical text under the guidance of the Skopos theory. The author has,on the basis of Skopos Theory-based analysis of typical translation examples, summarized the translation methods of medical texts at the lexical, syntactic and textual levels. In terms of vocabulary, the translator should follow the fidelity rule of Skopos theory so the translator should use literal translation and annotation, making appropriate deletions of meaningless words in Chinese when translating them into English words.Syntactically, according to the difference between Chinese and English expression habits, the translator needs to adopt methods including inversion, lexical conversion, changes of voices and addition of subjects. The translator should not only follow the fidelity rule of Skopos theory, but also pay attention to the coherence rule to increase the readability. For text organization, most Chinese sentences are short and concise while long and complex sentences are commonly used in English. The translator needs to integrate short sentences and makes adjustments of sentence orders, fully reflecting the requirements of the coherence rule. The research results show that the skopos rule must be implemented through the translation, and that the translator must keep in mind that the purpose of the original text is to spread medical knowledge and take proper translation strategies to make the target text more easily comprehensible and acceptable to the target readers. The thesis carries out a practical investigation into the C-E translation of a medical text at the lexical, syntactic and textual levels based on the Skopos theory, attempting to propose some feasible translation methods, which are hoped to be of certain value to the C-E translation of medical texts.
