A Report On English—Chinese Translation Of The Story Of Milk(Chapters1&2)

The source text for this translation practice report is taken from chapters 1-2 of The Story of Milk by Johan Ditlev Frederiksen,published in 2021 by Good Press.The book’s Chinese-translated version does not exist in China.The source text provides a detailed account of dairy farming in the West,the production of milk and its by-products,as well as technological inventions and creations related to dairy farming in Europe and the USA.In contrast to the Western dairy industry,which has a long history of development and a complete system,the development of the domestic dairy industry is relatively late,so there are fewer talents engaged in translation in this area and the corresponding translation research is insufficient.This translation practice report provides some constructive suggestions for the English to Chinese translation of the dairy industry.Combining with the characteristics of informative text,this translation practice analyzes the main difficulties encountered and draws the following conclusions.In order to achieve semantic equivalence,the translation of words mainly follows the semantic translation theory,the translator mainly discusses the translation of context-combining words,polysemous words,culture-loaded words and four-word structures,and how to transform the parts of speech to achieve cross-cultural communication effect in translation.When translating context-related words and polysemous words in the source text,the most accurate expression should be selected based on professional interpretation and contextual context.The translation of cultural-loaded words is done by adding explanations and translating them free translation.In order to incorporate local language and cultural characteristics,some words in the original text are translated in a four-character structure.Some words are translated to conform to the expression habits of the target language by using the method of conversion.The translation of sentences is mainly based on the communicative translation theory.When translating long and complex sentences,the logical relations are adjusted by the method of inversion,the sentences are split and reorganized by the method of division,and supplementary explanations are added by the method of amplification.By adding an invisible subject,the subject being translated as an object and so on,the English passive sentence can be active in meaning.In this report,semantic translation theory and communicative translation theory areused to explore and solve the problems in the Chinese translation of informative texts.In view of its different lexical and syntactic characteristics,different translation strategies and techniques are adopted in order to translate higher quality translations for a deeper international exchange in the animal husbandry.
