A Report On The E-C Translation Of Beyond GDP: Measuring What Counts For Economic And Social Performance (Excerpts) From The Perspective Of The Communicative Translation Theory

The proposal of the high-quality development strategy indicates that China’s economy has shifted from the high-speed growth to the high-quality development.GDP is one of the key reference indicators of national development,but it cannot tell people all the information about national and social health.Therefore,it is of great significance to study the indicators reflecting such aspects as well-being distribution and sustainability for national health development.Beyond GDP: Measuring What Counts for Economic and Social Performance is an informative text,which is designed to highlight the truthfulness,accuracy,and readability of the content,and the translator summarizes the specific treatment of informative texts based on this translation practice.Newmark’s communicative translation theory is centered on the target language and readers.It emphasizes both readers’ understanding of the source text and attempts to generate on its target readers an effect as close as possible to that gained on the original readers.This report first introduces the background of the translation task,the language features of the source text,the translation process,the communicative translation therory and its related research.Then,the report presents a detailed analysis of typical cases at lexical,syntactic and textual levels so as to discuss the corresponding translation methods and techniques.The case study shows that in the translation,the detailed analysis of the context of the source text and the language habits of the target readers is very important.Simultaneously,translation methods and techniques such as conversion of part of speech,voice conversion,restructuring,division and combination can improve the translation quality.In addition,this translation practice shows that the theory of communicative translation has a guiding role in the translation of informative texts.By adopting appropriate translation methods and techniques,the translator can make the translation more fluent,logical and understandable to the target readers,thus realizing the communicative function of the text.
