A Report On The E-C Translation Of Artificial Intelligence As A Disruptive Technology:Economic Transformation And Government Regulation(Excerpts)

The Fourth Industrial Revolution characterized by artificial intelligence has taken place quietly,whereas people’s way of life has been under change consequently.A great number of books related to artificial intelligence are emerging against this backdrop,conveying scientific and technological information,among which Artificial Intelligence as a Disruptive Technology: Economic Transformation and Government Regulation,written by Rosario Girasa,professor at Pace University’s Business School,is one of the representative works.This book comprises eight chapters,which respectively introduce the generation and application of AI,some policies and regulations on AI proposed by the US government,ethical and privacy issues related to AI,the bias caused by AI,some issues of intellectual property rights associated with AI and governance norms on AI in some countries.This translation practice report aims to analyze the E-C translation of Chapter 7 Intellectual Property Rights with the help of semantic translation and communicative translation methods under the guidance of Newmark’s text typology.The selected part conveys informative and objective facts about artificial intelligence and intellectual property rights.The Theory of Text Typology emphasizes the classification of texts according to language functions and proposes the selection of appropriate translation methods according to text types.The original text contains large amounts of information and the language is plain and objective,which accords with the characteristics of informative text defined in text typology.There are a lot of translation difficulties,including professional terms,proper nouns,nominalizations,passive sentences,and long and difficult sentences,which pose challenges to the translator.In view of these difficulties,the author finds that the translation can be more accurate by utilizing some semantic translation methods,like literal translation,addition,transliteration,annotation,and conversion.When dealing with passive or long and difficult sentences,the author holds the view that the readability and the effects of communication can be improved by using communicative translation method,such as voice conversion,structure analysis and separation.Through the analyses of specific cases,the author verifies the applicability of text typology in the translation of informative texts and the practicability of the above translation methods,aiming to provide some feasible suggestions for the E-C translation of informative texts.The author also hopes that readers can have a better understanding of the latest development of AI at home and abroad by the current translation practice and report,and some valuable references for the application of text typology in the translation practice of informative texts can be offered to future practices.
