A Report On The Chinese-English Translation Of China’s Science And Technology Road,Water Conservancy Volume,Water Conservancy Better People’s Livelihood (Excerpt)

Water conservancy is a major event related to the national economy and people’s livelihood,and is the cause closest to the people’s livelihood.In recent years,with the continuous enhancement of China’s comprehensive strength,the country pays more attention to and emphasizes the combination of technological hard power and cultural soft power.It is hoped that achievements can be made in building an international discourse system.Therefore,the translation of the scientific and technological information text in the water conservancy industry conforms to the trend of the development of the times,which is of great significance and value.Based on Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory,this ChineseEnglish translation practice report selects the second section of the second chapter of China’s Science and Technology Road,Water Conservancy Volume,Water Conservancy Better People’s Livelihood as the source text of the translation practice,aims to explore the feasibility of Newmark’s communicative translation theory for water conservancy texts.The source text mainly describes the major scientific and technological achievements in the field of water conservancy in China,and contains a large number of water conservancy terms,non-subject sentences,long and difficult sentences,etc.Therefore,how to deal with these translation difficulties encountered in the source text from the three levels of vocabulary,syntax and discourse,so as to accurately,smoothly and appropriately convey the original information and better serve the target readers is the focus and difficulty of this translation practice.Therefore,the translator combines communicative translation theory to analyze and explore the translation difficulties.At the lexical level,multiple searches and verifications are required to determine the translation of professional terms.Fourcharacter words and verb phrases need to be translated by free translation and part-ofspeech conversion,etc.in combination with specific context.At the syntactic level,the non-subject sentences are translated from using the method of adding subjects to ensure the completeness of sentence components and structure in the translated text.Long and difficult sentences should first analyze the main components of the sentence,then adjust the word order appropriately according to the meaning of the sentence,and finally use the division method to deal with it.The voice conversion method is applicable to the conversion between active and passive sentences.At the discourse level,the use of such as reference,substitution,ellipsis,and connection,etc.are beneficial for the cohesion and coherence of the text.Based on Newmark’s communicative translation theory,this translation practice report analyzes the translation strategies and methods of water conservancy informative texts by analyzing and listing a large number of source text examples.It is found that communicative translation theory has a good guiding effect on informative texts.With the help of this translation practice,the translator hopes to provide some reference for the translation practice of water conservancy texts.
