A Practice Report On The E-C Translation Of Walking Amsterdam(Excerpts)

Tourism develops fast presently with the development of society and economy.And tourism abroad is a better choice for the new generation of Chinese,therefore,it is of great necessity to translate tourism materials abroad into Chinese.Amsterdam is the famous tourism city in Europe and many Chinese travelers visit there every year.Although there are many translation woks on Amsterdam,many of them are not standard and accurate which will mislead readers and travelers.Therefore,the author's translation on Walking Amsterdam is in great need today.This is a translation practice report based on the author's translation on Walking Amsterdam,which is to mainly discuss how to make readers and travelers get the direct and accurate information through translation and retain the sense of appreciation on foreign culture in the meanwhile.The main problems the author meets in the translation are: the cultural default,the unclear translation of the third personal pronoun “it” and the fuzzy logic translation of long and complex sentences.Besides,the author also meets difficulties like the translation of proper nouns and traveling routes.The author tries her best to make them solved in the translation.This report is to discuss the translation problems of the selected part of Walking Amsterdam,a book about the capital city of Holland,and the available translation strategies under the guidance of the application of the “Functional Equivalence Theory” by Eugene A.Nida.The author finds some translation strategies to the cultural default,the translation of proper nouns,the unclear translation of the personal pronoun “it” and the fuzzy logic translation of long and complex sentences according to the “Functional Equivalence” theory,including the cultural compensation,omission of pronouns,repetition of nouns,division and restructuring.The author aims to provide references to the latter translators on tourism text to some extent.
