Because of its documentary properties,the documentary reflects the ideology,values and beliefs of the times in which people live,and its subjects have shifted from heroic models and celebrities in the early days of reform and opening up to the general public in the new era,recording their natural and real life conditions.Therefore,as a microcosm of social development and a carrier to promote cultural heritage,the documentaries on people are gradually getting closer to people’s daily life and evoking the memory of the times and the collective.The rapid development of self-media and the integration of media have become the norm,which not only promote the dissemination of documentaries but also make them appear frequently in the public’s view and be noticed by more audiences.In order to meet the aesthetic needs of the public and keep up with the pace of the times,character documentaries in the self-media environment no longer adhere to the inherent thinking and pattern in the selection of subjects and presentation of images,abandoning the objective record of "non-participation and non-interference" and incorporating the subjective consciousness of the writer and director,representing the dialogue between the audience and the creative object,and relying on new technology and new means to make bold innovations in image style and expression.The new technology and new means are boldly innovative in terms of video style and expression,so as to better play the social and cultural functions.In order to respond to the changes and development in the era of self-media,the documentary film is also constantly changing and innovating itself.Based on the creation practice of the graduation work "The Painting",this paper explores the reconstruction of the relationship between the subject and the object of the character documentary under the self-media environment in the light of the creation of character documentaries since the new century.The introductory section discusses the background and origin of the selected topic,the significance of the selected topic,the current status of the research and the macroscopic approach.The first chapter argues for the transformation of the creative discourse of character documentaries in the self-media environment from the displacement of the creative object to the creative subject,the dispersion of the creative discourse and the balance between other-shaping and self-shaping;the second chapter elucidates the expression strategy of the subject of the character documentary "The Painting",including highlighting the humanistic demands of the creative subject,taking into account the expression wishes of the creative object and the in-depth interaction and redistribution of the creative discourse;the third chapter elaborates the way of shaping the object image of the character documentary "The Painting",presenting the emotion,character and image of characters through poetic image language,auxiliary characters and regional culture respectively.In the concluding part,the balance between the will of the creative subject and the demands of the creative object in the self-media environment is summarized in the context of the character documentary "The Painting".
