This is a practice report based on a Chinese-English translation. The source text is taken from Languages of Chinese Nation, authored by Zheng Zining. The book was published by Jiuzhou Press in 2021.The translator selects the fifth chapter of this book as the source text, which contains 14,634 words. The source text discusses the spread and exchange between different languages, reflecting the trajectory of historical development and cultural communication between different ethnic groups in China. At both the lexical and syntactic levels, this translation report illustrates the difficulties encountered in the translation process and the corresponding methods. The difficulties at the lexical level include the translation of ancient book titles, cultureloaded words, and Chinese four-character structures. The translator adopts the methods of literal translation with annotation, transliteration with annotation, and free translation, respectively,to solve these problems. The difficulties at the syntactic level mainly include the translation of Chinese run-on sentences and no-subject sentences. The translator adopts division, amplification, and subject addition to deal with these difficulties.Through this translation practice, the translator hopes to convey the historical and cultural connotations behind languages to the target readers to make the world have a better understanding of Chinese culture. At the same time, the translator expects to provide a reference for the later translation of culture-related texts. |
