Naomi Kawase is a well-known Japanese female director born in Nara,Japan in1969.The spatial narrative in Naomi Kawase’s feature films is an important feature of the films and continuously developed and matured through subsequent practices,with their unique natural atmosphere and reflections on life and family,which have been favored by the world’s filmdom.This study focuses on the spatial narrative of Naomi Kawase’s feature films,which is divided into four parts based on the analysis of 11 director’s feature films.The first part provides an overview of the spatial narrative of Naomi Kawase’s feature films,introduces Naomi Kawase’s creative process,sorts out the theory of film spatial narrative,and summarizes the representative spatial types in Naomi Kawase’s feature films.In the second part,the typical spaces in the film are discussed,the secluded and mysterious forest,the ever-changing and surging ocean,the peaceful homesteads,and the diverse forms of roads are four typical spaces in Naomi Kawase’s films,which are characterized by nature,quietness,slowness and silence.The third part analyzes the spatial narrative techniques in the film.The daily narrative in the living space makes the images closer to reality.The metaphorical narrative in the polysemous space expresses multiple thematic meanings in the film.The decomposed narrative in the fractured space weakens the causal connection of the plot and also expresses the unpredictability of the characters.The dash narrative in the still spaces ushers in a sudden change in the plot in the calm,which makes the characters enter a new situation.The fourth part summarizes the spatial narrative function of the film.Naomi Kawase’s feature films deepen the theme of the film through spatial narrative,express the topophilia,heal the individual with family trauma,and reflect on the modernization process.Spatial narrative also shapes and represents individuals,builds character relationships.Besides,Spatial narrative forms a style mark,enhance the multi-sensory experience through sound and image,highlight the natural temperament in film.By the studying of spatial narrative of Naomi Kawase’s feature films,aim to provide strategies for reference in the spatial narrative of feature film creation. |
