This Report on translation from English to Chinese is based on Gas Market Report(Q1-2021),which is a report published by the International Energy Agency(IEA)in March 2021.The source text,belonging to English for science and technology(EST),analyzes the gas market in the first quarter of 2021,mainly including the gas market highlights 2020,gas market update and shortterm forecast for various countries and regions.Deep L,a machine translation tool,is used to help the translation task with memo Q,a computer-aided translation(CAT)tool.Based on the translation task,the Translator studies the cases in the translation and summarizes the findings.The shifts are studied in the translation task at lexical level and syntactic level under the guidance of translation shifts theory proposed by Catford,including shifts of plural,tense,voice,sentence sequence and others.This Report consists of five chapters.Chapter 1 is an introduction to the translation task,source text features,translation requirements and structure of this Report.Chapter 2 describes the translation preparations,including the preparation and use of CAT tools,research and review of background information,and selection and study of the supporting theory.Chapter 3 explains the translation process.The Translator uses Deep L to translate the source text,edits the translated segments on the memo Q platform,and conducts quality assurance.Chapter 4analyzes some translation cases.Translation shifts can be applied to the translation task,including addition of words,change of sentence components order,change of subjects and ranks,etc.Chapter 5 is the conclusion of this Report.Through the translation practice,the Translator studies and understands translation shifts and EST translation much.Though this Report has some limitations,it can provide some suggestions and guidance for teaching and practice of EST translation.
