Abstract/Summary:
This project is an English-Chinese translation project. It includes two parts. The first part is the translation report. The second part is composed of the original text and the target text. The original text is excerpted from the book,West of the Border: The Multicultural Literature of the Western American Frontiers by Noreen Groveer Lape. The selected parts are the first half of Chapter Two and Chapter Four. The first half of Chapter Two introduces the second coming of trickster(a cultural hero)and his resistance to colonizing values in the strained frontier relations by trickster tales and Salishan author Mourning Dove’s writings.Chapter Four describes the choice of cultural identity,a problem that mixed-race ethnic groups such as Eurasians had to face in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.According to Katharina Reiss,a representative of German functionalism school, the source text is a comprehensive text with both informative and expressive functions.First, there exist many religious words, academic terms and culture-loaded words.Second, there are a lot of periodic and loose sentences. With a view to readers’ psychology, cultural differences and linguistic aesthetics, this translation project is guided by George Steiner’s hermeneutic theory to achieve the purpose of translation.Meanwhile, the translator has employed different translation strategies(domestication and foreignization)and different translation skills(literal translation, free translation, omission, addition, combination and so on)to achieve optimal translation effect. This translation project is of great practical significance and research value.First, the translator hopes that the project will help readers better comprehend the issues of cultural identity and race.Second, this project fully demonstrates the validity and value of the theory and skills involved.George Steiner’s interlocking fourfold translation motion theory is highly practical and applicable, showing various details of the translation process in a hermeneutic way.Translators engaged in similar practices at a later stage can also learn some experience and gain some enlightenment from this translation project.Third, through this translation practice, the translator’s translation capability, cultural literacy, and critical thinking can be enhanced.
