A Report On The Translation Of Encyclopedia Of Contemporary American Culture(Excerpt)under The Guidance Of Strategies Of Domestication And Foreignization

This is an E-C translation report on the translation of Encyclopedia of Contemporary American Culture(Excerpt)which was first published by Routledge in 2001.With over 1,200 alphabetically-arranged entries,this encyclopedia briefly and comprehensively introduced almost every aspect of contemporary American culture.In this report,the author firstly introduces the translation task,the original text and the significance of the report in the first chapter.Then he gives a description of the translation process in the second chapter.In the third chapter,the author introduces the strategies of domestication and foreignization and the information text.In the fourth chapter,the author explores the specific application of domestication and foreignization in informative text form the perspective of translation methods through case analysis.Finally,in the conclusion part,the author summarizes his reflections in the case analysis and puts forward 3 opinions on the specific application of domestication and foreignization:1.The application of domestication or foreignization should be based on specific context;2.Translators should have more confidence in reader's acceptability when foreignization is applied;3.Translators should make full use of Chinese expressions in E-C translation when domestication is applied.As two opposite translation strategies,domestication and foreignization have their own advantages and disadvantages.Domestication can improve the readability of the target text,but it may lead to distortion of information;Foreignization is conducive to retaining the original information and exotic flavor of the source text,but it may cause some obstacles in reading comprehension.Therefore,in the translation process,translation strategies should be based on specific context.Besides,this translation practice not only improves the author's translation ability,but also deepens his understanding of these two translation strategies.
