A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Close Range Combat Wing Chun Explosive Self-defense Techniques(Excerpt)

As one of the most influential Chinese martial arts,Wing Chun plays a key role in the development of martial arts techniques and the spread of Chinese culture.In 1960 s,Wing Chun started to go abroad as Leung Ting,the last student of the great Wing Chun master Ip Man,spread it to Europe.Nowadays,Wing Chun has already been a compulsory skill for militaries and police in many countries,and more and more people engage in the group of Wing Chun learners.Wing Chun belongs to the whole world and there are many Wing Chun masters at home and abroad who have been devoting themselves to teaching and researching Wing Chun,and some books about Wing Chun written by them have already been published.Thus,the Wing Chun books written by foreign well-known Wing Chun masters are worthy to be learned by Chinese learners of Wing Chun and other martial arts.Then,the translator takes the first eight chapters of Close Range Combat Wing Chun Explosive Self-Defense Techniques written by Randy Williams,a student of Ip Man’s student,as the source text in this translation report.The Skopos Theory is selected as the theoretical basis for translation.And the translator analyzes how to use Skopos Theory to guide the translation of martial arts texts.According to the features of martial arts text,the translator chooses different translation methods to translate the source text based on the Skopos Theory,in order to show the original meaning of the source text.At lexical level,the translator discusses from four aspects including terms of body parts,terms of locality,terms of techniques and new terms with no equivalents in Chinese.At syntactic level,the translator analyzes from two aspects including complex sentences and redundant parts in the translation.At textual level,the translator researches from two aspects including semantic connection and repetition.The translator has understood the martial arts text further and acquired more knowledge of Wing Chun theory after writing this translation report.The translator hopes this report can provide some useful information for those who research the translation of martial arts texts.
