Representation Of The Image Of The Chinese Communist Party Under The CEA Framework-A Report On The English Translation Of Red Yan’an

The study of the translation of the image of the Communist Party of China(CPC)has been an important research issue in the field of intercultural communication.Previous studies on this subject have mainly focused on the selection of translation materials,the characteristics of translation activities,and the diachronic studies of translation.This report aims to focus on the solutions in the representation of the image of the CPC by analyzing the difficulties and problems concerning English translation practice of the image of the CPC in the first chapter of Red Yan’an,expecting to provide a reference for future translation practices concerning the communication of the image of the CPC.The analyses of translation cases in this report are from three perspectives,namely,comprehension,expression,and adaptation of the CEA framework,with relevance theory as theoretical guidance.In translation practice,the difficulties can be summarized as follows: 1)in the process of comprehension in expressive texts,it is easy to ignore subtle clues of comprehension,resulting in the inability to accurately obtain the image of the CPC from the source text,2)in the process of expression in informative texts,it is impossible to establish an acceptable cognitive context for readers to accurately convey the image of the CPC due to language barriers,3)the translation is difficult to achieve optimal relevance,resulting in ineffectively giving publicity to the image of the CPC.Based on the definition of translation by relevance theory and the principle of optimal relevance,the translation methods for the image of the CPC are as follows: 1)the translator needs to understand the linguistic features that shape the image of the CPC,and to understand the image of the CPC as portrayed in the original text by sentence structures,historical background information and special terms related to the CPC.2)From the perspective of expression,translations of the names of historical events and party symbols need to be authoritative and accurate;translations describing the members and activities of the CPC should be faithful to the original text and conform to the reading habits of the target language readers,without distorting the meaning of the original text and Chinglish.3)From the perspective of adaptation,when the target texts are not conducive to accurately spreading the image of the CPC,the translator should be flexible in changing the expressions,convey the implicit information,and examine the contextual effect.The translator can also simplify the original text so that the readers can understand the image of the CPC more easily.
