A Report On The Escort Interpreting From The Perspective Of Interpretive Theory:A Case Study On The 18^th Western China International Fair

The Western China International Fair(WCIF)provides a platform for trade exchange and cooperation between countries as a world international fair.The interpretation task the author undertook from 15 th November to 17 th November 2021,came from the 18 th WCIF,Chengdu Qingbaijiang Session,with the theme of hardware and electronics.Since this Fair belongs to the professional field of hardware and electronics,the service objects and scenes of the escort interpreting of the Fair are relatively complicated.Therefore,the interpreters may have to face difficulties such as professional challenges in translation,significant cultural differences between the two sides and complicated and changing scenes,and many unexpected situations.Since escort interpreters act as a bridge between Chinese and foreign parties,their translation quality may affect all aspects of the Fair,so it is crucial to choose appropriate theories to guide them and adopt proper translation strategies.The interpretive theory emphasizes the communicative meaning of interpretation.It focuses on conveying the inter-speech meaning,which is very suitable for escort interpreting in this Fair and has important guiding significance for the case study in the report.Given the above reasons,the authors study the escort interpreting practice of the 18 th WCIF under the guidance of interpretive theory.In this report,the author collected the escort interpreting corpus of the 18 th WCIF Qingbaijiang Session.Through the analysis of the corpus text,the author found that in the three steps of the theory,namely,comprehension,deverbalization,and reformulation,the author encountered complex foreign accents,overly professional content,elusory expression habits of some of the speakers,and the disparity of Chinese and foreign culture.Under the guidance of this theory,the author completed the interpreting activity well.Therefore,through the positive and negative analysis of his case,the author adopted the “Addition,” “Ellipsis,” “Free translation,” “Literal translation,” and “Reasonable Speculation.” The author also utilized the techniques,such as acquiring background knowledge and using translation tools and body language in the interpretation process,which help the authors.These strategies and techniques have helped the author better understand the source language information and thus achieve good interpreting results.The author expects that through the analysis of the cases in this practice and the summary of the corresponding interpretation methods and strategies,this report will provide some methodological guidance to learners engaged in similar fair escort interpreting in the future.
