The period of the Republic of China was an important period for the development of secondary education in Gansu Province.Primary education belongs to national basic education,and higher education belongs to elite education.Secondary education,as the link between primary education and higher education,had the function of linking the preceding and the following.Secondary education can not only provide opportunities for students who have completed primary education to continue their studies,but also can cultivate educated youth with secondary education level,and can also provide qualified students for higher education.During the period of the Republic of China,secondary education in Gansu faced many challenges and experienced a complicated and tortuous course.Gansu Province is relatively remote and closed,with a poor economic foundation,and the people’s ideas are relatively backward and conservative.In1924,Gansu began to implement the new school system,and the new school system was established.From the Gansu sub—province to the eve of the founding of the People’s Republic of China,secondary education in Gansu has gradually developed and formed,which has experienced a trough period,recovery period,development period and decline period.In the meantime,general secondary education,secondary normal education and vocational education all developed to varying degrees,and secondary schools were more widely distributed in various regions of the province than in the early years of the Republic of China.After1928,Gansu Province gradually formed a mechanism for raising,managing and distributing secondary education funds.However,the investment in secondary education funds has been insufficient for a long time,resulting in limited development of secondary education.During this period,secondary education has been strictly organizing the entrance examination and graduation examination,and achieved stringent checks and screening,which effectively guaranteed the quality of students in secondary education.The implementation of the new school system is a remarkable turning point in the development of secondary education in our country,and the Ministry of Education has revised the curriculum.Gansu Province has formulated a curriculum system that is in line with the conditions of Gansu Province in accordance with the new requirements of the Ministry of Education for the adjustment of curriculum settings and the actual situation of the province.In the late period of the Anti—Japanese War,the military movement of educated youth has exerted a certain influence on the development of secondary education in Gansu.In the late 1940 s,the student movement in secondary schools in Gansu was increasing day by day.In addition to the influence of the military and politics,the relationship between teachers and students in secondary schools during this period was harmonious,with various extracurricular activities and rich campus cultural content.In a nutshell,although the secondary education in Gansu Province has made certain achievements during the Republic of China,the overall secondary education in Gansu Province has not gotten rid of the relatively backward situation,and there are still many problems such as limited development scale,low school quality and unbalanced development.
