| Chinese web novels have been translated overseas and are welcomed by many readers.The trend attracts increasing attention.The possibility of the transition from a government-led,top-down transmission mode to a spontaneous,bottom-up mode emerges in the translation of Chinese literature and dissemination of Chinese culture.The effect of popular Chinese literature communication pioneered by web novels is beyond expectation,and it is making a new way for Chinese culture to go out.This paper takes Medio-translatology as the theoretical basis,takes the mainstream international translation platforms in North America as the research objects,and combines the Lasswell model to interpret this phenomenon from the perspective of social translation studies.The study finds that the integration of new media technology makes the translation and transmission of Chinese web novels different from the traditional literature translation and transmission in areas such as the agent of translation,translation content preference,translation strategy preference,translation channels,readers and criticisms.Specifically,translators are diversified,and are no longer limited to professionals.While the threshold of translation industry is lowered,a large number of non-professional translators participate in translation activities.The discourse power gradually shifts from cultural elites to the hands of the public,and the status of professional translators are challenged.The theme of translated works is relatively narrow,and the cultural load is weak.From the perspective of form,translation expands from the text-form to multimodal digital forms.The translation strategy favors domestication.The organization mode of translation evolves from the top-down mode which translation companies traditionally implement,to a new bottom-up model,represented by crowdsourcing;Translation criticism is no longer exclusive to experts and elites.The development of Internet technology makes common audience vocal.The feedback of readers is transmitted to translators at an unprecedented speed,which greatly enhances the interaction between readers and translators,and further strengthens the readers’ participation and user stickiness,and in the end,promotes spontaneous dissemination.Finally,this paper discusses the problems in the transmission of Chinese web novels,such as the limited themes of works,low culture-load,intense disputes over copyrights,low quality of translator groups,insufficient official attention,etc.The paper also puts forward the following advice: strengthening cooperation among translation platforms,actively training translators,forming correct translation concepts,cultivating reader habits,developing various product derivatives,enhancing reader interaction,and formulating assistant administrative policies,in the hope of providing inspirations for promoting the “going out” policy of Chinese literature and culture. |
